Review for sewerage scheme awarded in 2013

31 Jan 2021

The project review for Molepolole sewerage scheme awarded in 2013 is ongoing with award for construction anticipated by April.

Answering a question on behalf of Minister of Land Management, Water and Sanitation Services during Ntlo ya Dikgosi meeting on January 27, Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Setlhabelo Modukanele indicated that the sewerage system helped prevent the spread of water-borne diseases by safely transporting waste water to suitable treatment places.

He said the construction duration of 18 months was planned from the date of award.

He highlighted that all existing sewerage infrastructure was not adequate to meet the sewerage disposal.

In recognition of both the inadequate sewerage and water infrastructure schemes, he said the ministry came up with the Molepolole/Thamaga water supply network distribution project, which was awarded in 2008.

Mr Modukanele indicated that in an attempt to speed up delivery of both projects, the two separately planned projects were now combined for implementation as one package.

Kgosi Mompoloki Motswagole of Molepolole region had asked the minister to state when the construction of Molepolole sewerage system would commence, given that the absence of the system in such a densely populated village had delayed other important developments.

Responding to another question, the minister said it was true that Ghanzi Land Board resolved in principle, to allocate ranches to Ncojane community and a community borehole to Charles Hill community.

He said the ministry was still considering the request, together with submissions from other land boards, having earmarked some areas for possible demarcation of ranches, adding that once the exercise was completed, the ministry would either advertise or directly allocate community ranches to deserving Batswana.

He was answering a question from Ghanzi West’s Kgosi Mbao Kahiko, who had asked the minister to update Ntlo ya Dikgosi on progress made regarding the allocation of community boreholes for Charles Hill and Ncojane villages as it was resolved by the land board.

Specially elected Kgosi Oateng Setlhodi asked the minister to state the names of the owners of ranches OM 132 and OM 134 at Haina Veldt.

He also wanted the minister to inform the house why residents of Chanoga South, Mawana South and Samedupi did not benefit from the land within their vicinity through Chanoga Development Trust.

The minister was also requested to state the selection criteria used for obtaining ownership of the ranches.

Mr Modukanele said the Tawana Land Board on its sitting of March 6-30 2017, provisionally allocated OM 132 to Nxaraga Development Trust and OM 134 to Makalamabedi and Chanoga communities on conditions that they brought management plans and submit applications.

He said initial consultations were done with the leadership of Makalamabedi and Chanoga, adding that they were to form community trust and apply.

Mr Modukanele indicated that the board was awaiting the communities to prepare management plans and submit applications for ranches.

He said the expectation was for residents of Chanoga South, Mawana South and Samedupi South to benefit from the community trust of Makalamabedi and Chanoga.

The allocation of ranches, he said, was in line with the government policy of empowering communities to utilise the resources found in their areas. Ends
