Police happy with compliance to protocols

28 Jan 2021

Central police station commander, Superintendent Lebalang Maniki says since the beginning of the year there has been noticeable compliance to COVID-19 regulations by majority of the public compared to last years’ holidays.

Speaking in an interview with BOPA on January 27, Superintendent Maniki said commendable as it may, there still remained a few people who continued to put others at risk by being disobedient.

He said that from January 04 to date, about 88 motorists had been charged for failure to abide with curfew hours compared to 155 individuals were charged during previous holidays.

He further said that since the year started, about 178 people had been charged for failure to wear masks, while about 180 people were charged during holidays.

Superintendent Maniki added that as for individuals found drinking liquor in public areas, about 12 people had been charged this year while about 123 were charged during the festive season in 2020.

“Since the extension of the curfew this year we have not registered any unlawful gatherings.

However, during December holidays we did charge about 19 people who hosted illegal parties,” he said.

Furthermore, Superintendent Maniki said that as the fight against the pandemic continued, it was imperative for the public to be aware of criminal elements in their midst.

He cautioned the public to be vigilant at all times when dealing with people on matters that involved money, noting that the cases of taking money by false pretense were rising.

“We are currently dealing with a case in which a man of 79 years lost a large sum of money to scammers who approached him and pretended that they were police officers and demanded his bank cards and pins,” he said.ends
