Maun police charge over 100 for non-compliance

Maun police have charged 189 people for violating curfew regulations over the weekend.
Maun Station Commander, Superintendent Chenamo Orateng said in an interview that the majority were drivers who were charged at roadblocks while some individuals were charged during police patrol operations around Maun.
In addition, he said 124 people were charged for failing to wear masks in public places.
The police chief also revealed that a liquor restaurant was charged P5 000 for selling alcohol during the restricted period.
Superintendent Orateng noted that some people continued to violate COVID-19 health protocols despite efforts to sensitise them about the importance of preventative measures.
“We expect people to abide by curfew protocols and to reduce unnecessary movement. It is worrisome that some people roam the streets at odd hours and fail to account for their actions,” he said.
Superintendent Orateng vowed that law enforcement agencies would ensure 100 per cent compliance.
He also noted that in other villages in his policing area there was peace and order, as residents were cooperating with police officers to ensure compliance.
Police officers, he said, were working hand-in-hand with volunteers to facilitate preventative measures and ensure protocols were not compromised in order to contain the spread of the pandemic.
He appealed to the community to maintain social distancing and to wear masks at all times in public.
Maun is experiencing a spike in COVID-19 cases and it is attributed to weddings and funeral gatherings.
Superintendent Orateng acknowledged that they did not monitor weedings and funerals to ensure compliance. ENDS
