Saleshando vows to prioritise education

21 Jan 2021

Member of Parliament for Maun West, Mr Dumelang Saleshando says he aims to prioritise education during his tenure as the area MP.

Mr Saleshando said this during a kgotla meeting in Maun this week.

He said the aim was to channel the bulk of the constituency development funds towards education.

He said one of the planned projects in Maun West constituency was the construction of a primary school for Standard 1 to 3 pupils at Boro settlement  in order to cut the long distance children walked to access school.

Mr Saleshando implored residents to support efforts towards improving education in their constituency.

He also urged residents to guard against COVID-19, noting that more cases were being registered throughout the country and a double digit number of deaths.

Mr Saleshando encouraged residents to follow COVID-19 health protocols and to avoid unnecessary travel as the disease was spread by people.

Giving an overview of developments in the area, Village Development Committee secretary, Ms Chengizane Raanole decried delays in plot allocation by the Maun Sub Land Board.

Ms Raanole also said there were no developments in their ward, adding that they needed a shelter and offices for the kgotla. She also said they benefited from the constituency fund only once when a tower light was constructed in their ward.

Another resident, Ms Kago Masake complained that their children had applied for residents plots 12 years ago and were still awaiting allocation.

Ms Odumetse Ngande complained that COVID-19 had crippled her tent business. She noted that it was funded through the Poverty Eradication Programme and that there were no events.

Ms Ngande also said she was not able to benefit from the government subsidy for business people because her business was not registered.

In response, North West District Council deputy chairperson, Mr Lekonne Masoko said council recommended that the land board should allocate un-serviced land.

North West District Council chairperson, Mr Kebareeditse Ntsogotho said the government had not yet released funds for development projects because of COVID-19. He added that once the funds were availed, the council would consider projects requested such as the kgotla shelter and offices. Ends
