Police worry about peculiar visits after curfew

17 Jan 2021

Police have observed a trend where people contravene curfew regulations and make peculiar visits to particular locations during the wee hours.

Speaking at the district COVID-19 task team meeting on Wednesday, Masunga Police Station Commander, Superintendent Gaolatlhe Ngayaya said police had made arrests of people moving between Mulambakwena and Kalakamati in the wee hours of the morning every week.

She highlighted that they arrested 12 people last week who had contravened curfew regulations. She said six of them were travelling from Kalakamati between midnight and 4am.

Supt Ngayaya said the trend had been going on for some time  and that police suspected that the culprits were consulting divine powers of some sort.

She also said the suspects travelled in private cars in groups, and that they were reluctant to disclose the origin and purpose of their trips.

Supt Ngayaya highlighted that the escapades were risky even for police officers because some people could be carrying dangerous weapons at night, adding that whenever they arrest them they escort the cars to the police station to search them.

She also said security guards were aiding people who broke curfew regulations, as they borrowed offenders their reflective vests who in turn claim to be guards.

She said they had arrested and charged two security guards for aiding offenders.

Tshesebe Police Acting Station Commander, Assistant Superintendent Motlhokomedi Ponyane also said they were experiencing challenges with people who failed to observe curfew hours and wear masks.

He highlighted that they arrested party revellers over the weekend in Senyawe for unlawful gathering and further charged the host for illegal sale of liquor.

Assistant Supt Ponyane said they currently have 30 illegal immigrants in their cells and that 12 of them were arrested last week. Ends
