Greater Selebi Phikwe is experiencing an upsurge of COVID-19 cases.
Greater Selebi Phikwe DHMT coordinator, Mr Mpaphi Mbulawa, said in an interview that this was a cause for concern because the zone that covered Selebi Phikwe, Bobonong and Mmadinare was becoming a red zone.
The region, he said, had registered 420 positive cases and 50 were active.
Mr Mbulawa said Selebi Phikwe had registered many cases compared to Bobonong and Mmadinare, adding that the mining town registered a total of 227 positive cases, whilst Bobonong and Mmadinare registered 118 and 74 positive cases respectively.
However, he noted that Bobonong cluster had 29 active cases, whilst Selebi Phikwe and Mmadinare recorded 18 and three active cases respectively.
The greater Selebi Phikwe zone recorded a total of 363 recoveries.
Mr Mbulawa urged residents of greater Selebi Phikwe to always adhere to COVID-19 protocols, which included wearing a mask properly, regular washing of hands and social distancing.
He said an upsurge of positive cases indicated that some people failed to adhere to health protocols resulting in transmission of the virus.
Mmadinare DHMT cluster’s Dr Lorato Seopane added that psychological support was also critical during this period particularly on patients.
DHMT offered continuous social support and counselling to both inpatient and outpatient to help them cope with their condition. It also offered counselling to the patients’ families, colleagues, students and everybody in the patients’ circle to make it easier for them to accept recovered patients.
She highlighted that it was important for people to have information about corona virus. Ends
