No standard ratio for dormitories

09 Dec 2020

Assistant Minister of Basic Education, Ms Nnaniki Makwinja says the ministry did not have a standard ratio for a school dormitory as dormitories were of different designs in different schools.

When answering a question in Parliament, Ms Makwinja said the size of the rooms determined the number of the boarders who could be comfortably be accommodated.

She indicated that Shoshong Senior Secondary School had 128 dormitories for both girls and boys, making a total enrolment of 560 boarders with a ratio of 4:3 per dormitory.

Ms Makwinja noted that currently there were two blocks of 32 rooms in the boys’ hostels, which had not been occupied as they were undergoing renovations.

She further noted that the boys shared the available facilities at seven per room, which she indicated still allowed for adherence to social distancing protocols as espoused by the Ministry of Health and Wellness in the fight against COVID-19.

Shoshong MP, Mr Aubrey Lesaso had asked the minister to state the standard of boarding facilities and students’ dormitory ratio. He also asked the minister to explain the student dormitory ratio for Shoshong senior school and if it was in line with the national standard. Ends
