Segokgo urges church to help fight social ills

Tlokweng Member of Parliament, Mr Thulagano Segokgo has called on the church to join hands with government in the fight against social ills.
Speaking during the ordination of Reverend Benjamin Marais, of the Dutch Reformed Church in Tlokweng on Saturday, Mr Segokgo said government enacted laws alone were not sufficient to address social ills, hence the need for the church to play a bigger role.
He cited gender based violence (GBV) as one of the social ills that are troubling society, as such cases were increasing at an alarming rate.
“This is a deep strain in our society and the church must-play its role,” said the legislator.
Furthermore, Mr Segokgo, who is the Minister of Transport and Communications, called upon the church to bring up responsible leaders, who were willing to take the country and their communities forward.
He said Botswana needed responsible leaders to achieve a happy and coherent society and not people with a sense of entitlement.
He commended the Dutch Reformed Church for its role in developing the country, citing among others the Deborah Retief Memorial Hospital, Mochudi Resource Centre and Pudulogong Rehabilitation Centre. In addition, he said the government was committed to review the constitution, adding that the views of the church would be included. For his part, Reverend Marais said the church would continue to sensitise people about social ills.
He, however, decried the deterioration of morality, saying nowadays society viewed what was right as wrong and what was wrong as right.
He promised to serve and communicate God’s will, as well as bringing hope to those who had lost hope. Ends
