WUC hands over water tank to Sesoma
07 Dec 2020
Water Utilities chief operations officer, Mr Mathews Sebina has appealed to residents of Sesoma ward in Serowe to utilise water carefully and wisely as a scarce commodity.
Officially commissioning the galvansed 200m3 Sesoma ward water tank and associated works on December 4, he said Serowe Water Supply Scheme received water from three water sources, Moriri well field, Setekwane well field and NSC through the Palapye-Serowe connection.
He added that these were used interchangeably and at times conjunctively to ensure sustainable water supply into Serowe.
Mr Sebina said the ward used to be supplied with water from three boreholes through two smaller water tanks, which had surpassed their life span.
He stated that the tanks were old and leaking, which was contrary to the corporation’s water conservation drive.
The chief operations officer said the water gravitated from the water tanks into the ward water reticulation system, which was not linked to the entire Serowe village water infrastructure.
“Despite all interventions to supply enough water to Sesoma ward, the storage had been inadequate following the developmental growth due to an increase in the population of the area, while the infrastructure remained the same,’’ he said.
He mentioned that for a more reliable supply of water within Sesoma Ward and the surrounding areas, there was a need to replace the old tanks with a 200m3 Galvanized Steel Tank on dwarf walls.
The ward was also interconnected to the village water sources for improved water security, efficiency, and reliable storage.
Mr Sebina said the new tank had been connected to a new gravity pipeline from Khubulabopedi tank to Seretse tank, through a 600m long pipeline.
The project was awarded to Webex Holdings in January to undertake the works and completed it in August 2020 at a cost of P3 985 520.
The contractor completed and handed the project for usage in September.
Mr Sebina noted that a minimum of 15 employees were sourced from Serowe and about nine from Sesoma ward.
Member of Parliament for Serowe South, Mr Leepetswe Lesedi appreciated the development of water distribution wisely, indicating that there was acute shortage of water in the ward.
He appealed to residents of the ward to look after the tank, guard it against vandalism and water poisoning. Ends
