Parliament has learnt that 2 098 temporary teachers were engaged in the North West District over the past five years. Assistant Minister of Basic Education, Ms Nnaniki Makwinja said currently there were 700 temporary teachers engaged in the district.
She said in 2016, the district had 236 temporary teachers, 295 in 2017 while in 2018 there were 372 and 495 in 2019. However, Ms Makwinja did not make assurances on the number of teaching positions that would be made permanent and pensionable in the next two financial years, saying it was subject to the approval of the annual budget.
“My ministry submits manpower requests annually for the creation of positions and as such these are considered alongside the needs of the whole public service,” she explained.
Maun West MP, Mr Dumelang Saleshando had wanted clarity on the number of temporary teachers engaged in the North West District (Ngamiland) over the past five years, and the number of temporary teaching posts that would be made permanent and pensionable in the next two financial years. ends
