The P2.5 million that was budgeted for the annual Khawa Dune Challenge and Cultural Event 2020 was redirected to the COVID-19 relief fund after the event was cancelled due to the pandemic.

Responding to a question on behalf of Minister of Environment, Natural Resource Conservation and Tourism, Mr Machana Shamukuni said the government had to revise the budget, especially for the planned activities that could not take place due to the pandemic.

Mr Shamukuni, who is Assistant Minister of Tertiary Education, Research, Science and Technology, said the funds were used for the COVID-19 relief fund in all ministries. Mr Sam Brooks of Kgalagadi South had asked the minister to update Parliament on the budget for the Khawa Dune Challenge 2020.

Mr Brooks also wanted to know what happened to the money since the event could not take place, and why the ministry could not give that money to the Tsabong Sub-District Council or Khawa Trust to use in other projects as per their plans. ends
