29 Nov 2020

Monarch North councillor, Mr Almando Gopolang, says Francistown District Management Team (DHMT) is not delivering accordingly.

Responding to the mayor’s speech, he noted that recently at a wedding one person tested positive for COVID-19 and when the result were released, DHMT concealed the results from all who attended the wedding.

Cllr Gopolang said there was a large group of pupils from greater Francistown who sat for their Junior Certificate (JC) in Francistown without consent or consultation with city leadership and such was detrimental to pupils’ health.

Nominated councillor, Ms Badubi Lekang, said people on quarantine, if not supervised, were risk to spreading of coronavirus. Cllr Uyapo Nyeku of Phillip Matante Ward said COVID-19 patients were allowed to idle around the city, which was detrimental to society’s health.

He said Goldmine Junior Secondary School needed to be upgraded to a senior secondary school status as the population of greater Francistown region had grown greatly.

Cllr Lesego Kwambala of Itekeng Ward said there was need to conduct a survey and account to people of Francistown who lost their jobs and for businesses which had closed to close down due to effects of COVID-19.

He said that there was need to approach the society and parastatals to entice them to assist in making the city enterprising and more appealing. Whilst councilor for Ipopeng Ward Ms Jenamiso Mojaki said some COVID-19 students were released from quarantine and sent back to their respective schools before their test results were out.

On the issue of Gender Based Violence, Cllr Kwambala said it was high time government and the community at large to start to address the root cause adding that GBV were linked with #Dinwele Dladleng a concept he described as a chilling session.

He said with the closure of Francistown mines, the city should be given a recovery plan like that of SPEDU in Selebi-Phikwe if the city is to efficiently impact on the life of its citizens.

Many councilors anonymously highlighted that in their wards, street lights were not working and that there were problems with storm water drainage adding that some of the drains were not covered which posed a threat to the community. ends
