Government has constructed and rehabilitated some small earth dams within the North East District to support multipurpose use among them livestock and irrigation project. Responding to a question from MP for Tati West, Mr Simon Moabi, the Assistant Minister of Agricultural Development and Food Security, Ms Beauty Manake said dams used for irrigation purposes included Jackalas No.1 and Jackalas No.2 as well as Moroka Dam as they had adequate water capacity.
She said some dams were only designated for livestock benefits because of their small size. Ms Manake indicated that her ministry continued to extract water from rivers for irrigation purposes.
She said the North East District had water extraction from Shashe, Tati and Ramokgwebana to support a number of horticultural projects.
Furthermore, Ms Manake noted that her ministry was aware of the fertile land for agriculture production in the North East. Mr Moabi had asked the minister if she is aware that the North East District had fertile land for agriculture supported by rivers and streams that could be used for irrigation. He also asked the minister to state government’s plan to seize such an opportunity.ends
