Unity key in fight against GBV

Six hiking clubs partnered to inspire the public to unite and defeat gender-based violence (GBV) because it continues to rob families and friends of their loved ones.
The two-day walk would raise funds for organisations supporting victims of GBV and to also raise awareness about the impact of GBV on the nation and call on cessation of GBV and more support for victims.
Speaking at the walk, the public relations officer of Walk Away from GBV event, Ms Olebogeng Oitebetse encouraged families to shun GBV and promote love.
She said no relationship was immune to misunderstandings, but resorting to violence would never be a solution.
“We have managed to raise P100, 000 through our sponsors, the funds raised will be donated towards registered organizations which support victims of GBV and offer services aimed at reducing such incidents within Botswana. We also have Kamushinda Legal Consultants who offered to give 12 months legal service to victims or organizations which deal with GBV” she said.
Ms Oitebetse further said they noted that there was high numbers of GBV, while still dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It is in this effort that we partnered as hikers to fight the issue. Let us be each other’s keeper and ensure women, children and men are protected,” she said.
In addition, she said they were planning to do the event annually, and the general public was urged to show support in raising awareness of the event and spreading the #WalkAway campaign messages on social media. Ends
