Hospital construction halted due to resource constraints

19 Nov 2020

Construction of the long-awaited Gumare Primary Hospital has been constrained by funding limitations but the plan is to have the hospital completed during NDP11.

Responding to a parliamentary question, the Minister of Health and Wellness Dr Edwin Dikoloti said although construction of the hospital was yet to take off, the required design and build consultants for the hospital were approved by PPADB.

“The pre contract activities such as acquisition of plot and the required Environmental Impact Assessment have been concluded,” he said.

The Minister acknowledged that the delayed construction of the hospital was having adverse effects on the community of Gumare and surrounding areas.

Given this, Dr Dikoloti said in the medium term, though not ideal, the population in the geographic area would access services from the Shakawe Primary Hospital, which was expected to open in the first half of 2021.

Ngami MP, Mr Caterpillar Hikuama had wanted the minister to update Parliament on progress regarding the construction of the long-awaited Gumare Primary Hospital and whether he was aware that the delayed construction compromised the health of the people in that area. Ends
