Parliamentary portfolio committee on assurances unhappy
16 Nov 2020
Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Government Assurances has raised concerns over “laissez-faire attitude” by government ministries on commitments made in Parliament.
Committee chairperson, Dr Kesitegile Gobotswang said during a meeting Monday that there was a tendency not to update Parliament regarding change of plans about assurances made to MPs and electorates.
“When an undertaking has been made and there are some changes, Parliament should be informed,” he said.
Other committee members echoed the same sentiments indicating the state of affairs was creating mistrust between electorates and their representatives.
Members made the comments following the appearance before the committee of Ministry of Basic Education permanent secretary, Ms Bridget John who was asked to account for assurances made to Parliament on some projects planned for during different financial years from 2016.
She cited a plethora of problems resulting from lack of project implementation capacity, unavailability of funds or diversion of infrastructure projects funds.
Among the challenges the permanent secretary mentioned shortage of classrooms and textbooks, hostels and accommodation for teachers.
The committee is responsible for oversight and scrutiny over assurances and execution of resolutions made by government in Parliament.ENDS
