No plans to upgrade Tswapong region

15 Nov 2020

The Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Mr Kgotla Autlwetse has told Parliament that the Tswapong Region has not yet been considered for upgrading to a fully-fledged district.  “However in view of this request and similar ones presented before me, I have found it opportune to consider these holistically.

The exercise will entail extensive consultations with the affected councils and their communities according to Local Government Act of 2012,” he said when responding to a question in Parliament.

He also said the exercise would be carried out in a thorough and structured manner to ensure that all requisite steps were taken into consideration as prescribed by the law.

Mr Autlwetse said the conclusion of the Decentralization Policy was in process, adding that it would assist in the orderly implementation of the request. He said the draft of the policy was ready and final consultations would be concluded before end of this financial year.

Mr Autlwetse emphasised that consideration for establishment of new district was not determined by the Tribal Territories Act. Sefhare-Ramokgonami legislator, Dr Kesitegile Gobotswang had asked the minister to state if there were any plans to establish a fully-fledged district in Tswapong Region. ENDS
