Bogosi succession disputes worrisome

09 Nov 2020

Batswana have been urged to jealously guard the Bogosi institution, which has served the nation well over the years.

Delivering the State of the Nation Address November 9, President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi said government was concerned with the increasing involvement of politicians in Bogosi, and the use of the sacred institution to pursue political agendas.

Dr Masisi also raised a concern about Bogosi succession disputes, which continued to negatively affect decision-making and service delivery.

He explained that ‘Bogosi institution plays a pivotal role in nation building’ and that government continued to engage with dikgosi through various platforms to address challenges bedevilling it.

Furthermore, Dr Masisi noted that government was also making concerted efforts to improve the state of customary courts and kgotla offices, hence the refurbishments of 11 customary courts, which were completed by September.

He further stated that WIFI connection for 50 kgotla offices across the country was ongoing and was expected to be completed in March 2021.

“This initiative will provide access to WIFI services to communities of these areas, providing yet another opportunity for youth businesses to grow,” he said.   Ends
