02 Nov 2020
Ministry of Nationality, Immigration and Gender Affairs has donated health hampers to Mphuthe Junior Secondary School in Letlhakeng.
Handing over the donation on October 30, Minister Anna Mokgethi said she decided to come and donate the health hampers to the school because the area MP, Mr Liakat Kablay never stopped speaking about the needs of his constituents.
She said the love that Mr Kablay had for his people was shocking as even in Parliament he never ceased to speak for his constituency.
Minister Mokgethi said the donation was a good gesture by some people who came up with the initiative to contribute money towards a donation.
She said she then decided to come to Mphuthe after knowing of their needs through the MP.
Minister Mokgethi said ‘a girl child needs pads for her to live well and the health hampers will come handy in making sure that they do not lose their integrity.’
She further encouraged gender equality and women and girl empowerment.
The hampers included toilet papers, toothpaste, tooth brushes and others.
Mphuthe School head, Mr Meshack Sechele said they were honoured to be hosting the minister in their school and indeed the donation would help many children.
He said his school was committed to making sure that pupils were well taken care of and those in need were helped without delay.
Mr Sechele said government was assisting pupils whose parents could not afford them while for those who were abused or lived alone, the school had intervened to see how best they could be helped.
He said some pupils had been moved from home to school due to gender based violence.
The school head said some pupils stayed with and were taking care of their younger siblings, expressing satisfaction at the way teachers were handling those cases.
A student representative, Ms Jennifer Gaogopolwe appreciated the gifts, saying they would address the needs of some pupils.
She said they felt blessed as the toiletries would positively impact their social life.
Jennifer said the donations came handy as some parents could not afford to buy their children toiletries.
In his welcome remarks, Kgosi Tumelo Puleng expressed concern about the behaviour of some pupils, which he said needed attention eventhough parents were reluctant to attend meetings convened to address the issue.
He said the use of drugs and alcohol by some pupils was worrisome.
Nevertheless, he added that the donation would help many as some parents were unemployed.
Area Cllr, Mr Mothusi Ramogolane said many people in the area lived below the poverty datum line. He said the donation would help those in dire need of toiletries. ENDS
