Land availability critical to economy growth
26 Oct 2020
Ghanzi Land Board Secretary, Mr Dothodzo Tabengwa has challenged land administration actors to mobilise land properly to ensure that it supports economic activities.
Speaking at the orientation workshop of the newly appointed Ghanzi land board and Charleshill sub-land board members recently, Mr Tabengwa told board members that their existence went beyond the usual land allocations, leases collections, dispute resolutions, saying that they could influence and shape the future of the district in many ways.
Thus, he said that they should ensure that they dealt with the challenge of undeveloped plots saying idle land denied the country some economic benefits.
He said they should address challenges of undeveloped business plots at Mamuno border gate such as truck inns, hotels, guest houses and undeveloped ranches in the district.
Also, he said the officers should also consider opportunity that existed at Ghanzi as an answer to trucks currently parking by Khawa lodge ,the current challenges of trucks parking within Ghanzi township.
He said they should ensure that Land Administration Procedures Capacity and Systems (LAPCAS) see the light of the day.
In addition, Mr Tabengwa said their responsibility was to address all land issues in compliance with Tribal Land Act. He said they should also address issues relating to deserted homes or Matlotla.
He highlighted that effective land administration was important to economic development, citing the lands minister’s address during his recent meet with land administration actors.
He said the minister emphasised that ‘your decisions should come with responsibilities and you should serve the country’s interest by availing land to investors, not to foreign investors alone but remember that there are indigenous investors who can grow our economy.”
Mr Tabengwa also mentioned that the minister stated that they should facilitate land for food security and for economic diversification.
Ghanzi north MP, Mr John Thiite described land as a machine that ran the economy.
Mr Thiite opined that land boards should expedite the procedures and re-engineer those that had been overtaken by events.
For his part, Ghanzi District Council Deputy chairperson, Mr Ezekiel Kajuu implored land board to facilitate land servicing and work closely with other relevant authorities. Ends
