Mountain bike race Saturday

18 Oct 2020

Cycle4Life Cycling club will on Saturday host a mountain bike (MTB) cycle race at Palm Valley Spa and Resort in Oodi/Matebeleng.

It has been a long dry period for MTB riders due to COVID-19 pandemic, but despite how small a ride Cycle4Life Club race would be; most riders would be looking forward to this race.

Cycle4Life club would present two categories of 50km and 20km in a predominantly flat terrain route.

Othata Pelotona, secretary general of the club, said the route would be in the bush to avoid the highway and keeping the MTB flair for the riders.

He said the area chosen for the route was common to MTB races, ‘and should be a breath of fresh air as the route meanders between farms and Kgatleng bush side.’

To adhere to the COVID-19 safety protocols, Pelotona indicated that the 50km race would start in two batches of 50 and 25 riders as a way of controlling numbers.

He, therefore, implored riders to arrive at the venue at their specific assigned batch to avoid having all riders coming at the same time.

The race would be sponsored by LifeCycle Events and Timing, Bearing Man Group Botswana, PUMCO, KB Cycles, D&G Cycles, Windhoek Premium Light Beer, Palm Valley Spa and Resort, Handex Germ Fighter Hand Sanitizer as well as Airport Junction Mall.

Pelotona assured riders full and complete compliance to COVID-19 safety measures.

He noted that upon completion of the race, all riders would be expected to vacate the area to avoid crowding.

He further noted that to avoid cyclists congregating after the event, there would be no prize giving ceremony.

Pelotona said they were optimistic that 2021 would be a better season for cycling and sport in general.

He said they were hopeful that various cycling clubs and teams would initiate new ways of competitive cycling in order to keep the momentum going for riders.

Cycle4Life club race registration was ongoing at Ultimate Cycle Base or alternatively online at www.ucbtiming.co.bw.

Registration fee for both the 50km and 20km races would be P150.
