13 Oct 2020

Kanye South MP, Dr Lemogang Kwape, has applauded Legal Guard for adopting Lotlhakane Primary School.

Speaking during an event that marked a three-year partnership, Dr Kwape said the deal was good for both the school and the education sector.

Through similar partnerships, he said, value addition  would be attained on both teaching and learning experiences.

He thanked government for coming up with the adopt-a-school initiative.

Dr Kwape, also Minister of International Affairs and Cooperation, said government continued to invest heavily in the education sector because it recognised the need to create an educated and informed nation as espoused in Vision 2036.

He challenged the school to translate the support into an upward trend in academic performance. Legal Guard executive general manager, Ms Kgomotso Ratlhaga, said they took the decision to adopt the school after realising that the COVID-19 pandemic had done affected the education sector.

She said their journey with the school would entail engaging private tutors to assist pupils, especially those with learning difficulties.

She said they would also have boot camps to boost learners’ confidence and prepare them for final examinations.

Ms Ratlhaga encouraged other private companies and capable Batswana to find meaningful ways to assist schools.

For his part, the regional education director-south, Mr Acronews Maseko, shared that the school had been performing below par in the recent past, but now pleased that they scored 84 per cent in 2019, thanks to shared effort and vision by teachers, PTA and parents.

Although government invested a good share of resources into the education sector, he explained that more still needed to be done to address many pressing but competing needs, which he said birthed the adopt-a-school-initiative to afford capable Batswana a platform to assist government.

Likewise, he said the initiative had achieved a lot since inception in 2012 and thanked Legal Guard for coming on board.

The school head, Ms Cynthia Seelo, also conceded that the school had been struggling since 2013, but things improved in 2019.

Legal Guard further donated cleaning chemicals, sanitisers and face masks to the school. ends
