First Lady steps up efforts to end GBV

The President, Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi, has called on families, especially men, to shun gender based violence (GBV) and promote love.
He said no relationship was immune to misunderstandings, but resorting to violence would never be a solution.
President Masisi was speaking at start of a GBV cycling challenge campaign in Gaborone this morning (October 10).
The campaign themed: Cycling Towards a GBV Free Generation, was the brain child of the First Lady, Ms Neo Masisi in partnership with Gaborone mayor, Mr Father Maphongo.
For her part, the First Lady said, while still dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, the issue of GBV arose. "It is in this effort that I partnered with the city mayor and Minister Annah Mokgethi to fight the issue. Let us be each other's keeper and ensure women and children are protected," she said.
Police Commissioner, Ms Keabetswe Makgophe, said the police was committed to fighting GBV. To address child pornography and any form of child abuse, the police would, before end of November, open a child friendly office at Broadhurst police station as a pilot project.
Mr Makgophe also promised that by April 2021, the police would establish a gender unit to focus on GBV cases. "During the first lock down, we realised that victims of GBV found it difficult to access our office and we came up with a toll free number: 0800 600 144," Mr Makgophe added. The number would specifically address GBV-related issues.
And, the Minister of Nationality, Immigration and Gender Affairs, Ms Annah Mokgethi, said her ministry was committed to opening dialogue on fighting and ending gender based violence.
She said escalating cases of gender based violence were a concern, therefore, her ministry would partner with stakeholders to address this problem.
Gaborone mayor said time was now for gender based violence to stop. "No to GBV, it must stop now. Mosong ono re boloditse ntwa kgatlhanong le kgokgontsho" Mr Maphongo said. ends
