Member of Parliament for Francistown East, Mr Buti Billy, has presented books to Lekgaba Hill Primary School in Monarch.
Mr Billy, also Assistant Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development, said he intended to distribute books to all government schools in his constituency.
His aim was to nurture and support a culture of reading in primary schools as well as increase access to library books.
He also wanted pupils to appreciate good books and enjoy reading.
Mr Billy, who partnered with friends in the corporate world, said research had shown that reading books from an early age equipped children with the vocabulary to communicate at higher levels and excel in problem solving, adding that reading also improved children’s self-esteem and social awareness.
Furthermore, he noted that they were looking forward to starting pre-schools that would run for two years.
Lekgaba Hill school head, Mr Shadrack Jani, said they were embarking on a programme of inculcating the spirit of reading among learners.
He said some pupils were reluctant to pursue reading especially Setswana.
He said the school had a facility, which could be used as a library if relevant equipment was available.
Mr Jani said the donated books would form basis of the library, adding that reading for pleasure was part of the curriculum. ENDS
