Kweneng District regional director operations, Mr Steve Bothasitse, has attributed pupils’ violence against teachers to indiscipline.
Responding to councillors’ concerns during a full council meeting on Tuesday, Mr Bothasitse said the education sector continuied to experience this disturbing trend where mostly male teachers became victims .
“Learners are reluctant to take instructions from their teachers and then resort to violence,” said the regional director.
Mr Bothasitse said the Minister of Basic Education, Mr Fidelis Molao, recently released a statement indicating the position of the ministry about the prevailing violence.
He said e a psychosocial support team in the district was assigned to work towards establishing cause of the disturbing trend and report back to councillors in the next sitting.
Councillor for Hatsalatladi, Mr Kolana Kolana, had wanted to know what could be fueling violence against teachers and what remedial measures had been put in place to curb the state of affairs.
Also concerned was specially elected Cllr Anderson Mathibe who said a primary school teacher was recently assaulted by a learner.
Cllr Mathibe also complained about the increasing number of school dropouts in the district.
