Drug Free is The New Cool Organisation has partnered with a football team to create awreness on drug abuse and its consequences.
Speaking during an interview with BOPA, chairperson of the organisation, Mr Tumelo Sengawane said the strategic partnership with the Young Strikers football team in Broadhurst (Extension 27) came at an opportune time to sensitize the youth about the impacts of drug abuse.
He alluded that with the presence of COVID-19 it was vital to deter the prevalence of substance abuse in order to build a resilient and obedient nation that would take all health protocols seriously to avoid spread of the virus.
“Our communities ought to uphold initiatives that seek to curb against illicit behaviours that promote dysfunctional families,” he said.
Mr Sengawane said the intention was to hold an alcohol and drug awareness event scheduled for the October 17, to educate the football team and the extension 27 community about effects of alcohol and drug abuse.
He said the partnership project was propelled by prevailing circumstances brought by high rise in school drop outs due to alcohol and drug abuse related matters, noting that the event would be a one day programme with two sessions to educate players and community on alcohol and drug abuse.
“Our footprints in the fight against alcohol and drug abuse are seen at some government institutions and funds permitting our team could even travel the entire country in efforts to relay counselling sessions and educational messages,” he said.
He called on to the public and organisations to support their efforts for the betterment of the lives of children not only in Extension 27, but nationwide.
