Movement restrictions have contributed to the calmness and peaceful Independence Day in Francistown, according to Central police station commander, Superintendent Lebalang Maniki.
In an interview yesterday (October 1), Superintendent Maniki said they witnessed less movement during the holidays.
He said a lot of people behaved well and adhered to health protocols.
He said liquor outlets and restaurants observed the laws as stipulated under the state of emergency.
Police elsewhere around the city were also pleased by the calm and peaceful holidays as they reported no cases of road crashes except for Tatitown Police Station which reported two fatal accidents on independence eve.
Superintendent Edward Leposo reported that two people lost their lives in a road crash along the FrancistownMathangwane Road.
The two deceased, a male aged 40 years and female aged 37 lost their lives when a 16 seater combi they were travelling in collided with another vehicle a few kilometres from Orapa junction.
He explained that the two, both from Mathangwane, were certified at Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital.
“It was a relatively peaceful independence holiday with no reports of major incidents,” said the station commander of Kutlwano police station, Superintendent Neo Serumola.
He said only minor cases were recorded that included people gathering for fun.
However, Superintendent Serumola said some were charged for failure to comply with health protocol of extreme social distancing.
Meanwhile, police in Tonota recorded a case in which an 18-year-old Mater Spei College pupil was raped by a 30-year-old man in on September 29.
Assistant Superintendent Ontibile Motladiile of Tonota police confirmed the incident.
He said police investigations revealed that the victim was raped on the previous day at the suspect’s place in Tonota.
Assistant Superintendent Motladiile said the suspect, who was in police custody, lured the girl by buying her some sweets at a nearby shop before he asked her to accompany him to his house where he threatened the victim before raping her.
He explained that the suspect would be taken to court on a charge of rape as soon as police investigations were completed. Ends
