Kgosi Simon Nkgageng of Tati Siding says the COVID-19 pandemic has changed people’s way of life as evidenced by this year’s ‘dull’ Independence Day commemoration.
In an interview, he said since independence, Botswana had never celebrated the day as it did this year.
Kgosi Nkgageng said COVID-19 had changed everything including the way people associated, celebrated and conducted their daily chores.
He noted that every kgotla received a share of funding, but the district commissioner had advised that there would be no celebrations this year.
As part of COVID-19 protocols, he said, there were no gatherings in the village adding that prayers for both HIV/AIDS and COVID-19 pandemic ended a day prior to independence.
He said in the past, the community used to gather at the main kgotla to receive independence message.
Kgosi Nkgageng urged all to be tolerant since the pandemic would soon be a thing of the past and urged all to observe COVID-19 protocols to avoid infections and to avoid loitering around.
He highlighted that there was still problems with secondary school pupils who did not wear face masks.
On one hand, Kgosi Nkgageng condemned some residents who had a tendency of buying liquor in bulk to drink late at night and int the process played loud music. Ends
