Palapye Police on Monday arrested two Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BUIST) for incitement to violence and disobedience of the law.
A press release from Botswana Police says the arrest came after a demonstration by over 250 students for alleged unpaid allowances.
“The students refused to disperse as advised by the police and instead attacked the latter with stones and also started a fire between the buildings,” release says. The release further says the police had earlier read the proclamation ordering the students to disband but they did not comply.
As a result, the statement says, the police were compelled to use teargas to disperse the students.
According to release Professor Otlogetswe Tatolo, The BIUST Vice – Chancellor had addressed the students and assured them that their allowances would be credited on Tuesday as arranged by the Department of Tertiary Education Financing (DTEF).
However, the students rejected that and instead gave him an ultimatum of two hours to have paid the allowances, the release states.
