BNOC for elite athletes

Grassroots development of sports is driven by Botswana National Sports Commission (BNSC) while Botswana National Olympic Committe (BNOC) looks after the development of elite athletes, says

Khaulani Fichani. Fichani, who is a board member of BNSC, was speaking at the graduation of 21 sport administrators from different sporting codes on Friday.

He said graduates should be cognizant of the fact that grassroots development was driven by BNSC while BNOC looked after elite athletes.

He said one of the strategic objectives of BNOC was to increase the capacity of coaches, sport administrators and medical personnel. Fichani said for BNOC to produce world class athletes, it was development courses which would give graduates the technical skills to run effective programmes, and would also provide them with a foundation for proper development of sport.

The course, he said, covered management skills, marketing and sponsorship and resource management.

He urged them to use the skills acquired to grow sport.

He noted that marketing was one of the major challenges faced by all codes.

“It is my belief that you will use this knowledge and share it with your affiliates so that we can effectively run our associations,” he said. Fichani also commended BNOC for organising the course through virtual platforms.

“One thing that struck me was that all of you seated here this evening had not met until this evening,” he said. BNOC programmes manager, Wedu Motswetla said they had done well in utilising the virtual space. She said the course was also advantageous because it minimised costs associated with running the training. ENDS
