Botswana Bureau of Standards (BOBS) and Consumer Authority (CCA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to ensure compliance of goods and services to the quality needed in the market.
The acting managing director of BOBS Mr Keeper Morgan said during the signing of the MoU on September 23 that the collaboration would ensure consumer protection through examination and testing of commodities to determine quality and safety compliance.
“The MoU will also serve as a basis for both organizations to leverage on synergies we have as we collect and disseminate information on standards and technical regulations and creation of awareness in connection with standardization and quality assurance,” he said.
Mr Morgan said the MoU will also support clients with services including training on standards as may be required by CCA.
In her address, CCA chief executive officer Ms Tebelelo Pule said the two organisations would be working together in data collection, research, market studies and analysis to ensure enforcement of policies and act in the best interest of Batswana.
She said their relationship dated back, citing that they had participated in the Vegetable Technical Committee, Motor Vehicle Technical Committee and recently the Packaging and Labelling Committee hence the need to formalise the relationship.
Ms Pule said during the time of COVID-19 and State of Emergency, particularly during the lockdown business people wanted to bring their invented products into the market, especially the hand sanitizers.
She said they worked hastily together to develop a quality assurance standard for the best interest of the consumers.
“We are looking forward to the implementation of this MoU. It will strengthen and assist in discharging of our mandates,” she said. Ends
