Francistown West MP, Mr Ignatius Moswaane says anyone who commits domestic and gender based violence is evil.
Speaking at the handing over of food baskets to some residents at Tatitown Customary Court on Wednesday, Mr Moswaane explained that domestic and gender based violence had become problematic in Botswana, especially against women and the girl child.
He appealed to Batswana to stop domestic violence with immediate effect and learn to ‘forgive and forget’.
Mr Moswaane also thanked Dikgosi in the Francistown West constituency for having seen it fit to donate to deserving members of the community during the COVID-19 pandemic, which he said had sharply increased in Francistown.
He also appealed to Batswana at large to practice self-lockdown in order to defeat the spread of the deadly virus.
Earlier on, Tatitown Deputy Court President, Kgosi Ishmael Legwaila explained that the food hampers were donations from various sponsors for this year’s Francistown annual cultural day, which had been planned to be held at Tatitown Customary Court.
Kgosi Legwaila said because the cultural festival was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they saw it fit to donate the food hampers to deserving members of the community.
In her welcome remarks, Kgosi Chama Montshiwa of Tatitown Customary Court appealed to the beneficiaries to put the donations to good use and not to sell them.
She also took the opportunity to announce that the prayers for HIV/AIDS and COVID-19 would officially come to an end on September 29, thanking everybody who took part in them.
One of the beneficiaries, Ms Segelelo Kamera of Riverside location also underscored the need to stop domestic and gender based violence.
She advised couples to avoid cohabitation, which she said was the main cause of domestic and gender based violence in Botswana.
Ms Kamera also thanked the Tatitown customary court leadership for the food hampers, stressing that ‘it is the hand that gives that receives abundantly.’ Ends
