Water treatment plant project creates employment

22 Sep 2020

Construction of 100km long transmission pipeline and associated works from Masama wellfield to Mmamashia water treatment plant project has created temporary employment for a significant number of people.

Kgatleng District Council chairperson, Mr Daniel Molokwe told a special full council meeting on Monday that hiring of unskilled labour was done in consultation with village leadership and the exercise was done through Kgotla meetings to make sure community members were not left out.

“As of September 10, the project had employed 369 people, out of which 36 per cent are women and 61 a majority are youth,” he said.

Also, he told the meeting that corporate social responsibility tasks would commence in the four affected villages of Leshibitse, Artesia, Bokaa and Rasesa before the end of the project. On the other hand, councillors heard that water supply in the district was generally stable with enough pressure to supply both low and high laying areas.

He however said villages of Bokaa, Matebele and Oodi were still experiencing a deficit, especially in the high laying areas and a short-term mitigation of water bowsing would continue in such areas while long- term interventions were still being planned.

Further, Mr Molokwe said dams that supplied water to the Greater Gaborone area, under which Kgatleng District was covered, had adequate water to supply until the next rainy season.

“Borehole levels are also still fairly good.

However the major problem is the condition of infrastructure in other villages because it needs upgrading hence water leakages that cause high water losses,” he said. Ends
