Lack of funds affects road project

Kgatleng District Council has halted rehabilitation of the Rasesa/Morwa/A1 Road junction.
The council’s senior public relations officer, Mr Isiah Morewagae, confirmed this in an interview explaining that the road was not in a serviceable state and had surpassed its design life.
Mr Morewagae indicated that the road had no shoulders and had developed potholes more often after rainy season.
He said the road needed an asphalt overlay and shoulder reconstruction to bring it to its original serviceability level and that proposals were made to that effect to develop plans, but it could not be funded due to budgetary constraints.
“Currently we managed to secure an amount of P1.6 million to protect the edge from further damage, hence narrowing the road further. The limited funds secured are only enough to do road edge protection for only 2 000m between Pilane and Morwa,” he said.
He said a tender for road edge repairs was at evaluation stage. Furthermore, he said maintenance activities needed to restore full serviceability of the road included shoulder reconstruction and asphalt overlaying with estimated cost of P12.5m but were not funded as a result of limited funds.
“Our advice to the road users is to use alternative routes with high level of serviceability like Pilane traffic lights to new A1 (landfill), Borejane road-New A1 and Morwa-Bokaa traffic lights.
Those who are using the old A1 as is commonly called should exercise utmost care and adhere to speed limit of internal road standards,” he said. Ends
