Health workers patients safety priority

Mahalapye District Health Management Team (DHMT) coordinator, Ms Thandie Kgosiesele, has underscored need for regulations that would provide for safety of patients and health workers.
Ms Kgosiesele said patients and health workers must establish a cordial working relationship to ensure their safety.
“As human beings, they must respect each other’s feelings,” she said.
Officiating at an occasion where Mahalapye District Hospital commemorated World Patient Week, Ms Kgosiesele said in 2019, the World Health Organisation (WHO) observed that patients could only be safe when health workers were also safe.
As a result, Ms Kgosiesele said September 17 was marked as the date to commemorate patients’ safety day.
In addition, Mahalapye Hospital manager, Mr Tapiwa Babolaim said the objective of the week was to raise awareness about patients’ safety and that of health workers.
“It also aims at enhancing global understanding, solidarity and action to promote patients safety,” said Mr Babolai.
“The commemoration calls for us to commit to patients’ safety, and to devise strategies that strengthen patients’ safety and health workers safety,” he said.
Meanwhile, nursing superintendent, Ms Chimidzane Kamoghenghe, said members of the public must take heed of the messages that were deliberated at the commemoration and act accordingly by contributing to and ensuring safety of patients and health workers.
As such Ms Kamoghenghe encouraged members of the public to actively participate in the organised week long campaigns as a way of raising awareness on patients and health workers safety.ENDS
