Government reimburses Zone 7 farmers

09 Sep 2020

Farmers whose cattle were killed during the Zone Seven Foot and Mouth eradication were compensated, says Assistant Minister of Agricultural Development and Food Security, Ms Beauty Manake.

Responding to a question in Parliament, Ms Manake said the model of compensation was that farmers were given the first 10 live animals followed by 70 per cent cash compensation at P1 700 per head, adding that the remaining 30 per cent was given as live animals.

Ms Manake said she was aware of litigation that followed for various reasons and those successful were duly compensated as per the court judgement. She said the judgement omitted four farmers, noting that the ministry however paid two of the farmers in August.

Assistant Minister Manake stated  that payment processing for one of the two unpaid farmers was finalised last week and the farmer would receive payment at anytime while the other farmer will be paid as soon as the reconciliation and verification and the number of livestock was cleared.

Tonota legislator, Mr Pono Moatlhodi had asked the minister to confirm whether all owners of cattle killed during the Zone seven Foot and Mouth eradication were compensated. ENDS
