WUC builds shelters for travellers
02 Sep 2020
Travellers boarding vehicles at Ghanzi/Charleshill junction, commonly known as 44, now have shelter to shield them from unfriendly weather conditions, thanks to Water Utilities Corporation (WUC).
The corporation built three bus stop shelters and installed four solar streets lights to a tune of over P174 000.
Handing over the project to the department of roads recently, WUC chief executive officer, Mr Gaselemoge Senai, said despite struggling with water reticulation and rehabilitation of old pipes, they were still obliged to give back to the community.
He said in the past, they donated tables to one of the schools in Ghanzi as well as kraals and ramps at Charleshill- show ground, a gesture that he said they would continue to uphold.
On other issues, Mr Senai said part of management team from headquarters had been relocated to management centres to hasten decision making in an effort to improve service delivery and meet customer needs.
Mr Senai encouraged WUC clients to pay their water bills on time saying funds from waters tariffs would help them service more land.
When giving a project overview, WUC general manager in Ghanzi, Mr Amogelang Molefe, said since each management centre was allocated P20 000 per year towards corporate social responsibility, they had to tap from other votes to complete the project while labour was provided by WUC employees.
Mr Ofentse Kaneno from the roads department appreciated the donation saying the bus stop shelters would protect travellers from harsh weathers conditions while the solar light would scare away predators.
The same sentiments were shared by Ghanzi East Sub-council chairperson, Mr Gabriel Nguahoka, who said they had long wished to pursue similar projects, but they were financially constrained.
Mr Nguahoka pleaded with WUC to extend the same gesture to communities living in settlements. Ends
