Ministry considers lifting moratorium
02 Sep 2020
Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing Development is considering lifting moratorium on purchasing of pool houses, says Minister Mmusi Kgafela.
Responding to a parliamentary question on September 1, Mr Kgafela said a decision regarding the lifting of the moratorium was expected before end of this year.
So far, Mr Kgafela said consultations had been held with a view to solving not just the problem of housing for civil servants, but for the nation at large.
He further said his ministry was exploring improving the capacity of civil servants to rent houses from the private sector.
Mr Kgafela said one of the initiatives by government was to utilise private sector capacity, where government had limited or no capacity.
He said using capacity in the private sector allowed government to concentrate on other basic needs. Member of Parliament for Francistown South, Mr Wynter Mmolotsi had asked the minister when he would consider allowing occupants of old pool houses to buy them in view of government commitment to encouraging home ownership.
