Vandalism theft in schools worry city council

The Gaborone City Council (GCC) is worried about rampant vandalism and theft in schools.
In an interview recently, GCC public relations officer, Ms Segametsi Kebonang, said such acts did not only disturb schools operations, but were also costly.
She urged members of the public to help take care of government resources.
Ms Kebonang said GCC was also concerned about people who trespassed into schools as well as vandalism of school kitchens and doors.
Items meant for pupils feeding were also stolen. She said offices were also broken into and some office items such as computers and accessories stolen.
Furthermore, she stated that toilets flushing systems were broken, while some parts were removed.
“This is truly a disturbing trend that will be a setback in our academic programme,” she pointed out.
Ms Kebonang said the acts could drain the council’s coffers and thus called on schools to engage strategic partners such as the parents teachers associations to find ways of taking better care of their resources.
She said the council took a decision to engage semi-permanent artisans for critical routine maintenance such as carpentry, plumbing and fencing works.
Ms Kebonang called on the school authorities to report any acts of vandalism or theft to both the council and the nearest police station and appealed to members of the public to help the police in bringing the perpetrators to justice. ENDs
