Sub-council implements 547 projects

Okavango Sub-district Council is currently implementing 547 projects at the cost of over P151 million.
Speaking at the just-ended council session, Okavango Sub-district Council chairperson, Mr Mpoke Karapo said out of the 547 projects, 360 were completed, reflecting an achievement of 66 per cent, while the remaining 187 were ongoing at various completion stages.
“Expenditure to date is P95 133 078, which translates to 62.7 per cent. These projects include 147 Ipelegeng projects, 172 constituency community projects, 143 destitute housing units, 79 RADP housing units, maintenance of 10 primary schools and construction of a classroom block at Mohembo East,” he said.
As for social and community development, Mr Karapo said mass assessment was conducted on households for vulnerability during COVID-19 pandemic, while the exercise was supported by engagement of additional 27 temporary social workers.
He said a total of 13 404 households were assessed, of which 11 194 were recommended for support with food rations.
The chairperson also noted that a total of P26 247 851 was spent on food hampers, P2 144 416 on farm produce and P349 217 on transport services.
Under the Poverty Eradication programme, Mr Karapo said 83 beneficiaries had been awarded contract on supply of bread to primary schools, which would end in March 2021.
“A total of P1 458 321 was spent on supply of bread, fruits and vegetables to primary schools through the breakfast initiative, compared to P1 550 409 from the previous quarter.
This drop is attributed to closure of schools during the lockdown period,” he said. Ends
