Mayor pleads for payment of water bills

27 Aug 2020

Mayor of Jwaneng, Ms Olga Ditsie, has pleaded with residents to pay water bills that currently stand at over P3 million.

Speaking during Jwaneng Town Council meeting on Wednesday, she said government requested Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) not to disconnect households during a lockdown period, but it was unfortunate that some households had not paid the arrears.

“People should take note that delay in payment would only lead to arrears pilling up, so I would like to plead with councillors to discourage the community from taking advantage of the COVID-19 situation since there is no obligation from government regarding provision of free water,” she said.

Ms Ditsie said just like any other entity, WUC had been affected by COVID 19 and that failure to service arrears made the situation more diffiuclt for the corporation.

She however, said despite such challenges, WUC had been doing a good job and there had not been any problem with water supply in Jwaneng.

She also said Jwaneng Mine had injected P1.5 million to refurbish Kaduwe borehole, a project she said would not only benefit Kaduwe residents, but the Jwaneng community.

On other issues, Ms Ditsie made an appeal to stakeholders to join hands to clean the town as Independence Day celebrations near.

“The council has some clean-up activities already lined up, therefore, it is against this backdrop that I would like to call for a massive clean-up campaign that will see everyone in Jwaneng participate,” she said.  Ends
