No plans to assist premier league teams - assistant minister
21 Aug 2020
The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture Development has no provision to assist teams that play in the premier league.
Responding to a parliamentary question on Wednesday, Assistant Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Development, Mr Buti Billy, said expectation was that teams sourced sponsorship from individuals and private sector to enable them to compete in the league.
He said he was aware that Palapye constituency had Morupule Wonderers that played in the premier league and sponsored by Morupule Mine. With regards to the construction of a stadium in Palapye, Mr Billy said the ministry had a plan to build mini stadia in batches of 10 across the country, but Palapye was not in the list.
However, the assistant minister said other areas would be covered after the current batch was complete and assured Parliament that Palapye constituency would therefore be considered alongside other areas in the next batch of facilities, funds permitting.
Mr Billy was answering a question from Palapye MP, Mr Onneetse Ramogapi, who asked the minister if he was aware that Palapye had a football team competing in the premier league, but it was being financially challenged by travelling long distances to honor fixtures and if so, to state what he was doing to assist the team and why Palapye constituency was not considered for construction of a stadium.
