Food bank intiative serves vulnerable residents

20 Aug 2020

Member of Parliament for Gaborone Central, Mr Tumisang Healy, has decided to assist vulnerable people in his constituency.

Mr Healy said in an interview that the initiative dubbed Food Bank, had assisted over 139 people since inception.

He said the COVID-19 pandemic had crippled many communities throughout the country and further disadvantaged those who were most vulnerable.

Mr Healy said the initiative was inspired by government’s efforts to provide food aid through the social and community development department during the first lockdown.

“Due to the limited number of food packages in comparison to the great need within the constituency, a criterion was established in order to manage the distribution and ensure that the most vulnerable members of the community are prioritised,” he explained.

He said his office received a large number of requests from Ipelegeng programme workers whose work was suspended.

“The Gaborone Central constituency leadership made a decision to provide food to former workers of the Ipelegeng programme. The distribution of the food packages is ongoing at ward level through the support of ward development committees and the support of the Gaborone City Council,” he said.

In addition, Mr Healy said they continued to form ties with the industry towards sustainable development of the initiative; citing Sefalana Hyper in Block 3 as one of the partners.

Mr Healy encouraged teamwork to overcome challenges presented by the pandemic. ends
