Youth society in need of financial assistance
10 Aug 2020
Future Explorers Youth Society (FEYS) chairperson, Mr James Pitseyagae, has called on the business community and individuals to assist the association financially.
FEYS, a non-governmental organisation, was established in 2007 to promote educational work amongst school going children, environmental conservation and also equip youngsters with life skills.
Currently, the association is working with 350 school going children and out of school youth in Maun.
Mr Pitseyagae said in an interview that apart from promoting environmental conservation, they were engaged in charitable projects to make a positive change in the society.
He said they were experiencing financial constraints, which hindered them from undertaking some of the planned projects noting that they relied much on camp fees as well as donations.
Every December, he said, they organised camps where children were taught on environmental protection topics and practical experience of the community in nature and each child was charged camp fee of P50.
During the camps, the children were provided with technical, social and design skills in environmental protection and sustainability that would enable them to participate in shaping the future.
However, Mr Pitseyagae said they suspended the activity due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Other activities carried by the association included donations to the less privileged.
Mr Pitseyagae said their annual plan had been negatively affected since most of the planned projects had been suspended, noting that they were forced to review the plan and prioritize projects they could easily implement.
He the association had embarked on gardening projects where children were encouraged to start backyard gardens at their parents’ homes.
Mr Pitseyagae said they had realised that most yards had big portions of underutilised land, hence encouraging children to undertake garden projects.
Since its establishment, the association e housed some needy people, donated food hampers and planted trees in different areas around Maun to promote conservation.
The chairman revealed that plans were underway to construct another house for a needy person but the project was halted due to the pandemic.
Recently, FEYS in collaboration with Kynphausen Foundation from Germany donated food hampers, school uniforms and winter clothing worth P75 000 to hundred school going children from schools in Maun.
The association partnered with the German Foundation which assisted it with funding. ends
