As the nation continues to grapple with challenges emanating from COVID-19, some ecotourism companies continue to show compassion towards local communities by offering assistance to those in need.
Following appeal by Okavango Sub-district Council, Okavango Wilderness Safaris also jumped into the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) bandwagon as it recently donated food and hygiene supplies to about 100 families in Tsodilo at a cost of over P60 000.
Speaking at the handover ceremony recently, the company’s managing director, Mr Kim Nixon said as the nation was struggling during the trying times of COVID-19, they recognised the importance of working to support government’s relief efforts and assist rural communities in best ways they could.
“We remain inspired by the work done by government to protect Batswana and we will do our best to bring meaningful relief in such trying times,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mr Nixon said Wilderness Safaris had an incredible relationship with the communities they operated within, adding that the company had 22 lodges across the country with 1 200 employees, of which 96 per cent were Batswana.
Assistant district commissioner, Ms Tumelo Chibua commended Wilderness Safaris for the donation.
She said despite the tourism sector being one of the most affected in terms of revenue, the tourism company saw it fit to extend a helping hand to the Tsodilo community, hence a commendable move.
She added that government alone could not afford reliefs during the COVID-19 pandemic era. ends
