Social gathering incidents increase in Kanye
06 Aug 2020
Police in Kanye have expressed concern about rising cases of people conducting social gatherings in contravention of COVID-19 protocols.
In an interview with BOPA recently, Kanye Station Commander, Superintendent Mmoloki Mogale said one incident was registered at Goo-Lebekwe Ward and another at Tlhomo Junior Secondary School, where some teachers had a party.
Supt Mogale revealed that since the beginning of the two-week lockdown for Greater Gaborone, altogether 110 violations, 27 in one day, had been registered.
He said the charges included people moving around without permits, not wearing face masks in public, selling alcohol and conducting social gatherings or parties.
The police chief said also registered were cases of shops operating outside stipulated hours as per COVID-19 guidelines.
He advised shop owners to seek clarity from relevant authorities lest they found themselves on the wrong side of the law.
“Strict enforcement is being done and we have received tremendous cooperation from people in our drive to break the chain of infection,” he said.
He said the police were working hand in hand with the District Commissioner’s office to ensure timely issuance of permits to members of the public.
Meanwhile, Supt Mogale has said since the lockdown, no serious crimes had been recorded except two of gender-based violence. Two women were assaulted by their partners at Nneneke Lands and Mahikana Ward while the suspects were yet to appear before court, he said.
Supt Mogale advised partners to seek advice and guidance in the event they had disputes. Ends
