Permits mandatory for shopping - police

03 Aug 2020

Submission of permits at shop entrances by customers is a priority during the lockdown period.

In an interview with BOPA on Sunday, Botswana Police Service (BPS) assistant commissioner, Mr Dipheko Motube explained that submission of permits at shop entrances was a prerequisite and formed part of all COVID-19 health protocols that store managers ought to instill.

He said it was everyone’s responsibility to ensure that those walking through shop entrances had permits that qualified their movements.

Mr Motube said BPS had set patrol teams at roadblocks across Gaborone and surrounding areas to thoroughly check and ensure that travelling with a permit regulation was adhered to.

He added that their patrol teams were given clear instructions to monitor situations at the periphery of shopping complexes to assess if customers were adhering to set regulations.

When asked about if there was a chance of misusing a permit, especially by essential services employees, Mr Motube said they were not aware of such incidents, adding, however, that BPS went as far as checking the validity of the movement permit. Ends
