Company donates Kgotla shelter

30 Jul 2020

Ditshipi based entrepreneur Mr Johan Calitz has built a kgotla shelter valued at about P180 000 for the settlement.

Speaking at a ceremony that was held to handover the shelter on Tuesday, Councillor for Bojanala ward, Mr Luke Motlaleselelo appreciated the gesture by the owner of Johan Calitz Hunting Safaris, which has been operating in their community for over 20 years.

Mr Motlaleselelo observed that a kgotla structure was a vital part of any village as it strengthened democracy in Botswana.

He encouraged other companies to emulate the company by donating durable  projects.

Further, Mr Motlaleselelo implored the Ditshipi community to play a part in the conservation of natural resources in their area.

He noted that government, through the Community Based Natural Resources Management (CBNRM) model, had empowered communities to develop their areas.

Mr Motlaleselelo observed that the donation by the company was a result of the relationship with Okavango Kopano Mokoro Community Trust (OKMCT).

He also noted that government could not provide some developments to Ditshipi as it was not a recognised settlement, therefore donations by the community trust were worthwhile.

He commended the Calitz Company for the sacrifice at a time when the tourism sector as a whole was affected by COVID-19.

Deputy Batawana regent, Kgosi Bringle Dithapo also thanked Johan Calitz Hunting Safaris for the donation.

Kgosi Dithapo said the gesture by the company was a sign that it was part of the community.

He also urged the Ditshipi community to keep observing COVID-19 protocols.

The company’s manager, Mr Cobus Calitz said the shelter project, which was carried in two phases of ground work and structure, managed to create jobs for some Ditshipi residents.

Mr Calitz said the project commenced in February and was completed within a month, but the handover was delayed by COVID-19. He appreciated the long-term relationship their company had with Okavango Kopano Mokoro trust. ENDS
