Headmen receive allowances following 2002 directive
28 Jul 2020
The Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Sethabelo Modukanele has told Parliament that Headmen are remunerated with allowances following a Presidential directive of 2002.
According to Mr Modukanele, the directive was informed by the recommendation from the report of the Kgosi Mothibe Commission on the Feasibility of paying ‘unpaid’ Headmen of Arbitration which was constituted in 2001.
He explained that the commission had identified that due to the number of Headmen of Arbitration to be absorbed, it would be feasible to remunerate them through allowances and not sustainable to pay them salaries.
He was responding to questions from Member of Parliament for Nata Gweta Mr Polson Majaga who wanted to know why Headmen were remunerated with allowances and not salaries and whether government was planning to offer them gratuities/pensions at the end of their service. ends
