Rise in teenage pregnancy worries assistant DC
26 Jul 2020
The number of teenagers falling pregnant in the South East South Sub- district is disturbing, assistant district commissioner has said.
Ms Kushata Tsokedi said this at a District Multi-Sectoral AIDS Committee (DMSAC) meeting in Ramotswa recently.
Ms Tsokedi said there was need for those violating teenagers to face wrath of the law.
This was in response to a DHMT report, which showed that 20 teenagers were recorded pregnant from April to June.
The report also showed that five out of the 20 teenagers had dropped out of school due to pregnancy.
It also indicated that among the school dropouts was a standard six pupil of Taung, one learner from Baitlotli Junior Secondary School, two from Kagiso Senior Secondary School and one from tertiary.
The report further showed that 29 and 26 teenagers fell pregnant between January and March this year and October and December last year respectively.
Nevertheless, the sub-district recorded a decline in the number of sexually transmitted infections from April to June.
Only 488 cases were recorded against 722 recorded between January to March this year and 742 between October and December last year.
The decrease was attributed to low attendance of clients at health facilities between April and June due to movement restrictions. ENDS
